Pet Nutrition.
Now we all know to keep chocolate away from our babies, but what else shouldn't we feed them? Here is a list of potentially dangerous foods. BONES - There is quite a debate about bones. Some veterinarians will tell you bones are natural, safe, healthy and are good for cleaning teeth. However research has suggested the hazards may very well out way any benefits. Many experienced veterinarians will agree that bones (even raw ones!) can very seriously harm our pets. Bones can splinter and puncture our pets mouth, throat, gums, stomach or the intestinal tract usually requiring surgery. Teeth can be cracked which can lead to root infections. It is a common occurrence where a bone fragment has broken and lodged between the upper molars causing the dog acute stress and need of attention immediately. Apart from the marrow in the bone, the nutriention pets get from a bone actually comes from the soft meat, cartilage, fat, and connective tissue, not the bone itself. So why risk your pet needing major surgery when very nutritious foods are available. Rawhide is great for satisfying your dogs need to chew. Of course, like all potentially dangerous things for your pet it is wise to do your own research and make up your own mind. And when concerned asked your veterinarian. SUGAR - Just like humans sugar is not good for our pets. Not only is it harmful for their teeth it can also cause all sorts of unfriendly side effects. Diarrhea, vomiting, and can even cause diabetes. Also yeasts that live in the digestive tract feed on sugar. If the yeasts get out of control they produce mass amounts of toxins and have a bad effect on the pets immune system and nervous system. Once the immune system is damaged the animal is open to a whole host of nasties. REFINED FLOUR - It is best to keep our pets away from processed and refined foods. White flour causes a sharp insulin response which over a period of time can cause diabetes just like sugar. ONION AND GARLIC - Cats are more affected than dogs but both should avoid onion and garlic. They contain sulfoxides and disulfides which can damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. Garlic is not as toxic as onion. SALT - Our pets need salt to stay healthy and to keep electrolytes balanced. But we need to know how much, too much salt can cause a dog to gulp down water and cause a life threatening condition called bloat, which causes the stomach to fill with gas and twist, leading to a most painful death unless emergency medical help is received immediately. Also it is very important to what kind of salt. Normal table salt is basically white poison for humans and animals a like. Table salt is chemically cleansed and heated at extreme temperatures. The excessive heat damages and alters the natural chemical structure. Table salt is also filled with absorbents and iodine. With all the chemicals and additives, table salt no longer resembles natural salt and serves only to pollute our pets bodies. Sea salt is a far better alternative, but even sea salt is not what it should be. With people dumping chemicals and pollutants into the ocean, sea salt has been tainted. One of the purest salts on the earth free from pollutants, toxins, and completely uncontaminated, is Himalayan salt. RAW EGG - contains avidin, an enzyme that keeps your dog from absorbing biotin. This can cause hair loss and skin inflammation. Usually though this generally only happens with regular feeding of raw egg. ALCOHOL - Alcohol can causes injury, sickness, urination problems, put an animal in a coma, or cause death. BREAD DOUGH - Can be very dangerous for your pet when ingested. The body heat of the animal can cause the dough to expand. Even a small amount can cause trouble since bread dough can rise many times it's size. Your pet may experience vomiting, abdominal pain, bloat, and disorientation. And if your pet ingests enough, it may even require surgical removal of the dough and treatment for alcohol toxicosis due to fermentation. MILK - Some pets can tolerate small amounts of milk. But generally most dogs and cats find it very hard to digest milk because they lack a certain enzyme to properly break down the lactose. It can ferment in the intestines and cause diarrhea. Also the pasteurized milk we get from our supermarket is heavily heated which damages the proteins in milk. Calves that were feed pasteurized milk died before maturity. RAISINS AND GRAPES - While only one or two occasionally probably won't hurt your pet, resent research has shown kidney failer and other problems can occur from feeding your dogs Raisins and grapes. Cats generally seem less affected, however due to the many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins the ASPCA (Animal Poison Control Center) Advises not to give them to your cat or dog. SOY - Birds that were feed soy experienced beak and bone deformities, immune system disorders, premature maturity, and infertility to name just a few. Feeding soy to dogs and cats also seems to host a whole lot of unwanted conditions such as malnutrition, digestive distress, immune system breakdown, and possibly cancer and heart disease. MOLDY OR SPOILED FOODS - Dangers range from diarrhea to mycotoxin poisoning which is a toxin produced by a fungus. MUSHROOMS - Some varietys of mushrooms are toxic to our pets.
